carefully stepping over
as I walk
towards that gate

a dandelion picked
and squashed
now in discarded fate

she held it – innocent
on the way here in the car

smiling grinning laughing
fwower fwower fwower

it fell from little hands
as did
her happiness when

she flung her arms around me
what was to happen then

when I reached that metal gate
I gave
into my pain

running back
to pick it up
I took her happiness home.

strolling down the winding path
scented herbs grow wild

we three picked and squashed and breathed
in sun that warmed our smiles

this flower that leaf gathering
lavender rosemary mint

all in a blade of grass bouquet
stifled air so sweet

these are for a princess
beautiful do you know who?

gazing lazy at a fuzzy sky
shaking a head askew

unsuspecting of child felt love
unconditional and true

looking at me with hands outstretched
she said — they are for you.
